Split ticketing allows you to save money by breaking up your journey into multiple parts with a ticket for each. This can be useful if making a long journey across peak and off-peak times. For example, you can purchase a peak ticket just for the section of journey that you’re making in peak times and off-peak tickets for the rest.
Our split ticketing solution manages breaking up the journey for you.
Booking a Split Ticket
To benefit from Split Ticket savings, make sure you select the Split Ticket fare type rather than an Advance or Anytime ticket.
Where available, Split Tickets will appear at the top of the results page. By default, the cheapest option will be shown first.
To view Split Tickets for additional departure times, click ‘Show More Options’ to expand the full list. You can then scroll down to see the available Split Ticket options for different times (indicated by a circle icon in the box).
Your selected ticket type will be shown as Split Tickets.
How it works
- Your journey will be split into multiple parts. You will have a separate ticket for each part.
- Each ticket will have individual rules and restrictions. One part of your journey may have an Advance (non-refundable) ticket and another part a flexible Anytime ticket. You may be restricted to specific trains, rail companies or routes. Examples can be found here.
- Split ticketing is only available for physical tickets collected from a station. It is not available for mobile tickets through Inntel’s Rail Ticketing app.
- Make sure you travel at the correct time and on the right train for the ticket you’ve bought.
- You must keep hold of all your tickets (including any railcards) when travelling and will need to switch tickets at different stages of your journey.
- Your train must stop to drop off and pick up passengers at the stations where your journey splits.
- You may need to change seats during your journey.
Cancellations & Exchanges
There are more restrictions on cancelling or exchanging your split tickets:
- Individual tickets can’t be cancelled. This is a rail industry rule to prevent fraud.
- As per normal rules, Advance and used tickets cannot be cancelled.
- Split tickets cannot be exchanged. If it is likely that you may need to change your journey, a normal Advance Single may be more suitable.
- You can cancel your booking completely if all your tickets are cancellable (e.g. flexible tickets that have not been used).
- Tickets in one direction (outbound or return) can be cancelled if they are all single, flexible tickets.
- All tickets in one direction (outbound or return) must be cancelled.
- If you have a return ticket as part of your journey, all tickets on the booking must be cancelled. If one of the tickets is an Advance or has been used, then none of the tickets can be cancelled.

Examples
Bristol to Leeds - 2 x flexible tickets
Let’s say you want to travel from Bristol Temple Meads to Leeds. This would normally be a direct journey on an Anytime Single ticket.
With Split Ticketing, your journey could be split into two parts with two different tickets. For example:
How to travel:
1. Take any off-peak train from Bristol. Have your off-peak ticket ready for inspection.
2. Make sure the train stops at Cheltenham Spa to pick up and drop off passengers.
3. You do not need to leave the train at Cheltenham, but if you made a seat reservation, you may need to change seats. Have your Anytime ticket ready for inspection.
4. Make sure the journey from Cheltenham does not include passing through or stopping at London Terminal stations.
Cancellations & Exchanges
As both are tickets are flexible, provided they have not been used, you can cancel. The entire journey will be cancelled.
You cannot exchange your tickets. If the tickets do not cover the new date and/or time that you want to travel, you will need to cancel and rebook.
Liverpool to Shrewsbury – 1x flexible ticket and 1x advance ticket
This journey once again has one split at Chester. However, this time there is a flexible ticket for the first part of the journey and an Advance/non-refundable ticket for the second part.
How to travel:
1. Take any train from Liverpool that passes through or changes at Birkenhead. Have your Anytime ticket ready for inspection.
2. At Chester, get off the train and change onto the Transport for Wales train to Shrewsbury.
3. Make sure you take the specific timed train that you have booked and sit in your assigned seat. Have your Advance ticket ready for inspection.
Cancellations & Exchanges:
As one of your tickets is an Advance, you cannot cancel or exchange the tickets.
